To start, consider companies you have heard of before. You’ll want someone who has a good reputation. Don’t cheap out and go with the guy you found on Craigslist, that just sounds sketchy. · Are they insured? You can check their insurance status online at the U.S. DOT Licensing & Insurance Carrier Search. No insurance = no go. Also, check to see if your homeowners or renters insurance covers your items in the move. If they don’t, you may want to consider a supplemental moving insurance.
· Are they licensed? If the company will be moving you across states they should have a US DOT number. You can search for this number at the DOT search mentioned above. If you are moving within the state, the company should have a state license. In Wisconsin, additional to basic licensing, there is the Wisconsin Movers Association which has more stringent requirements for their members.
· What will you pay for? Make sure you know what is included in the rates you are given. Rates can vary depending on season and day of week. Does the rate include fuel chargers? Will you be charged for things considered “extra services”? Make sure you do your research and know exactly what you will be paying for.
